About Safe Routes to School

Safe Route to School (SRTS) is a program that encourages students to walk and bicycle to school by providing solutions to health, safety and transportation.

Why?

  1. The obesity rate in Nevada has nearly doubled from 13% in 1995 to 25% in 2007, largely due to decreased levels of physical activity.
  2. Fifty percent of the children hit by cars near schools are hit by vehicles driven by parents of other students, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

SRTS Carson City

The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Carson City is a collaborative program involving the Carson City School District and Board of Trustees, Carson City Public Works, Nevada Department of Transporation, Sierra Nevada Journeys, Muscle Powered, and several other partners. This website, however, is a personal website of the SRTS Coordinator, and does not necessarily represent the views of the partners.

SRTS officially launched for the 2008-2009 school year with Walk to School Day, and Walk to School Days have been held twice a year since that time.

Dan Allison is the SRTS Coordinator for the Carson program, contracting with Sierra Nevada Journeys for completion of the NDOT grant for the coordinator position. Dan will be working with all six elementary schools and two middle schools. Details about each school and programs at that school are available.
