In the 2005-2006 school year, there was a pilot program of Safe Routes to School piloted with Mark Twain Elementary School and Seeliger Elementary School. The pilot was funding by the Nevada Department of Transportation, Office of Traffic Safety. The grant was completed through a grant awarded to Muscle Powered, a nonprofit organization which advocates for human-power transportation and recreation, based in Carson City, and the work was fulfilled by Arleen Richartz and Sue Newberry.
