Mark Twain Elementary School

MarkTwainESMark Twain Elementary School is located at 2111 Carriage Crest Dr in Carson City, Nevada. Enrollment is about 567 students in grades PreK-5. The Principal is Laura Austin, the Vice Principal is Ruthlee Caloiaro, and the PE Specialist is Colleen Katen.

The school has two crossing guards, at Carriage Crest Drive & Mountain Park Drive, and at Carriage Crest Drive & Slide Mountain Drive.

Mark Twain was part of the 2005-2006 SRTS pilot program, was not part of the 2008-2009 SRTS program, and will be part of the 2009-2011 SRTS grant application.

Mark Twain participated in the International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, and was recognized in two articles in the Nevada Appeal. Participation in the fall 2009 Walk to School Day was about 20%.

Mark Twain has had a continuing program of encouraging students to walk and bicycle, even when it did not have a formal funded program. It has participated in more Walk to School Days than any other Carson City school. Mark Twain has improved safety for students who walk and bicycle by improving drop-off/pick-up procedures and communicating effectively with parents through a brochure and newsletters.

SRTS Grant 2009-2011

Mark Twain is one of the eight schools included in the 2009-2011 SRTS grant to the school district of $259K, of which $142K is for infrastructure and $117K for non-infrastructure. Mark Twain was tentatively allocated $9,900 for infrastructure. Mark Twain is also part of the $500K SRTS grant to Carson City Public Works, which tentatively indentifies several projects near Mark Twain.
